Blog posts have been a bit sparse recently. A large reason for that is that I’ve been taking part in Module One (Designing Your Way) of The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design course, run by Rachael Taylor and Beth Kempton. I really can’t recommend this course enough; I’ve found it invaluable both in terms of the techniques it teaches as well as for how it has the ability to motivate and inspire.
The course was divided into four areas – inspiration; sketching; colour and pattern. There were video tutorials, creative exercises, interviews with designers, technical workshops to do in conjunction with design programs and a weekly Q&A. There was also (still is in fact!) a wonderfully supportive Facebook group made up of other students, who are seemingly from all walks of life and based all over the world.
Below are a selection of patterns which I created for various exercises during the course. Some of these will/have become patterns used on stationery and with some it was all about learning new techniques to use in the future.
Further details about the course can be found at the Make It In Design website.
Thank you Rachael and Beth for this inspiring course.
